A selection problem

I am having a problem when selecting text or tables to edit, cut, paste...
the color that highlights the selection darkens and it is difficult to see
the section beneath. Any ideas of what might cause this and any suggestion
on how to correct the problem?

What application and version are you referring to? I suspect Word, but we
need to know the version.
