a vague error message - does it mean my outlook is damaged?

I just went from dialup to cable internet. Set up Outlook and the test
message from the POP3 set up window went out OK. Tried to do a message the
standard way, and got this message: Operation failed. 0x8004010F An object
could not be found. Is my Outlook software in need of re-installation? Or is
this an indication that I did not set up things correctly? Anyone that can
help, I would appreciate it!

most likely the *.SRS file is corrupt. Just close Outlook and then delete
the .SRS file found at:

\documents and settings\<userid>\application data\microsoft\outlook

Thank you for your assistance. Should I go to start, then run, then type in
cmd? Then when \documents and settings\<Tim> appears, type in the rest of
what you noted? I am not sure what I am doing, and am apprehensive I will
create a disaster here!

Yep, or startup windows explorer and type in the path of...

c:\documents and settings\tim\application data\microsoft\outlook

in this folder you find a file that is <outlook profile name>.SRS. Just
rename the file to <outlook profile name>.SRS.ORIGINAL. Next time you start
Outlook, it will create a new SRS file. At this point, check your
send/receive settings since renaming the file resets these settings back to
a first-run condition.
