A way to have a 'cut' command affect only the cell value?

Using ctrl-X or 'cut' will not only remove a cell's value but also its border and interior settings. Is there some property that can be changed to prevent this?

Why not do Edit=>Clear=> Contents. instead (or hit the del key)
