Abnormal Termination

When I try to exit word I keep getting a message that says "abnormal termination" and when I click OK it throws me out of the program without saving my document. Then I have to re-enter Word, where it asks me to save over my old "normal" template and attemps to recover the file. This has resulted in little .wmp files all over my system in sub-folders that I have to routinely find and delete. HELP! Why does it do this?
