Absolute positioning; is there a way to view pixel#'s of object

I have a webpage that I cannot figure how the original designer knew where to
set some "menus" in an absolute position. Surely you all don't just pick
pixels, and then keep working (viewing results in a browser) until everything
lines up...?

No.

If you understand how to layout your page, you often won't use absolute
positioning at all. I rarely do.

Most of the time, I take measurements from a Photoshop/Fireworks layout
image...
