Academic Versions of Office 2007

I see on Ebay lots of people selling "academic" versions of Office
2007 Ultimate at significant discounts versus what I might pay for the
package at Amazon, Best Buy, etc. They claim that the academic
version is identical to the "regular" (I.e., full priced) version, and
that anyone may purchase these (from the seller, of course) with no
special restrictions.

Can anyone enlighten me on these academic versions?

They are probably illegal for you to use. You can read the End User License
Agreement (EULA) for most MSFT software here:
