Anyone have any idea why seemingly random records in a table in Access 97
would disappear?

Are you sure they're actually gone and not just that the records are not in
the order you expect? When looking at a table or query without an explicit
OrderBy clause the records can return in a completely arbitrary sequence.

The records are most definitely gone. I have tried compacting and repairing
with no change.
