Access 2003 and "compact on close" looses mdb

I've used tools/options/"compact on close" successfully for years. Is there
some problem with it in Access 2003 and XP sp2? Occasionally when I exit the
single user local database I get a message box saying Access couldn't find
some mdb file. What it seems to have done is created db1.mdb in the same
folder and deleted the original mdb. It looks like it cant find db1.mdb and
rename it back to its original name. Is this a known problem?
