Access 2003 Developer Extensions not working

N

Nick Kasoff

I just installed Access 2003, Developer Extensions, and Jet 4.0 SP8 on
a system with XP Home Edition. When I open a file in Access, I get the
warning that "To block unsafe expressions, MS Jet 4.0 SP 8 or later
must be installed." This has been done, and confirmed, per KBID
239114. But it still doesn't seem to work.

More important, however, is that the Package Wizard isn't working.
When I launch it, I get a couple of warnings that "unsafe expressions
aren't blocked" - apparently the result of the failure described
above. But then, I get a "Custom Startup Wizard" window with Help,
Cancel, and Next enabled, and a big white area with no fields. The
next button goes nowhere.

Any idea what I've done wrong or how I can get this working?

I went to :

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

and just let it scan my PC for necessary updates. One of
those was the Jet8 update. Then I let it install
everything that it said I needed - now I don't get that
annoying popup. But I do get the popup that says "This
program may have harmful code ..."

Then I found out that the 2003 Packaging Wizard
doesn't "self-register" .dll's and .ocx's - so I'm f'd and
will probably go back to Access 2000.

Okay, thanks for the explanation on the macro warning. But now, on to
the more important issue: The package wizard isn't working at all. I
get a blank screen with help, next, and cancel buttons at the bottom.
The next button does nothing, the cancel button exits. So I am unable
to make packages. I'm just running this wizard from the start menu -
what's wrong?

That happened to me as well - I shutdown and restarted -
and then worked.

Sorry, but that didn't work for me either. Any other suggestions will
be appreciated.

Hi Nick,

The problem you are seeing is caused by a missing directory in your user
profile. Create the following directory

C:\Documents and Settings\<your profile>\Application Data\Microsoft\Access

Then launch the ADE wizard and it should work.

That worked, thanks. Did I do something wrong to cause this not to be
created in setup?

Hi Nick,

Sorry to leave you hanging, got busy doing other things. No, you didn't do
anything wrong. Normally this folder is created by Access, but under a few
upgrade scenarios, the folder isn't created. I haven't quite figured out
what the specific scenarios are, but the symptoms are easy to spot.

I too have the same problem, but none of the solutions worked for me.
I have tried uninstalling Office and ADE and deleting a related
folders and registry entries. I have tried installing on a fresh
install of Windows XP Pro (with SP1 and updates).

Can you suggest anything else?

thanks
Martin

Hi Martin,

Hmm...

Second person in two days who has not had any luck with this workaround.
I'm not aware of any other issues that cause this blank screen problem.
Could you provide the following informaiton?

1. Copy the path to the Access directory that you created into your
response so I can see it.
2. Is there an ADE11 folder in the Access folder you created?
3. If there is an ADE11 folder, what folders and files are contained in it?

If there is no ADE11 folder, try creating one and see if that has any
effect.
