I develop and maintain several Access 2003 databases and about a week ago all
the mdb front ends started crashing Access after compacting on closing. The
problem doesn't occur with compiled mde front ends though.
Posts about this type of problem indicated they were often related to vba
references. By trial and error I found that the crashes only occured in mdbs
that reference mda or mde files.
I can reproduce this problem with a blank mdb, opening the vba ide and
setting a reference to utility.mda in the OFFICE11 folder or any other mda or
mde. You also need to have at least one empty module compiled and saved.
Set 'Compact on close' and then close the mdb.
I've tried this on two PCs running Office 2003 SP2 on XP Home and Pro SP2.
It may just have been coincidence but the problem started shortly after the
O2003 SP2 update was installed.
Can anyone reproduce this problem or supggest a fix or workaround?
