Access 2007 Slow When Connected to Network

P

I am using XP and Access 2007. When I am working on my laptop with no network
connection, Access 2007 runs great. If I plug my network cable in, the
response time on almost all queries, reports, etc. slow to a crawl.

I do not have any linked tables or any files on the network that I am
connected to. I do have a macro that grabs a file from Access 2003 (MDB file)
at night, but it only runs when called by a scheduled task or if I manually
run it.

As you can imagine, having to disconnect and reconnect to the network
anytime I want to do any work on the DB is a real time-consuming activity.
Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you don't tell us the format of the database that you are using, if
you are using replication and - most important of all - if you are using
ODBC linked tables in your database; ie, your database is split between a
frontend and a backend.

If you are using linked tables, try switching the protocol library. For
example, try using TCP/IP if you are using the named pipe library and
vice-versa. Even if you don't have any linked tables on the network, we
don't know which path your communications are using when you are connected
to the network; even when your backend is located on the same local machine.
Even an (poor) external access to a DNS server or to a Domain Controler
could give trouble.

Another possibility is that you have some kind of Loopback adapter (or
Wireless controler?) installed on your computer and who is setting havroc on
your system when the LAN is connected.

There are some network protocol analysers like WireShark or Microsoft
Network Monitor 3 (both free) who are probably capable of putting some light
on this problem. However, I never had to use them; so I cannot tell you
anything more about their use.

Thank you for your response. As I said in my post, I do not have any linked
tables and have no Access objects on the network. The entire database is on
my laptop. My only challenge is when I plug into our network, Access slows to
a crawl.

I will forward your recommendations to our outsourced IT department to see
if they can use the info to resolve the problem.

Thanks again for your help

Yes, I noticed that you did have said in your post that you didn't have any
linked table on the network but you did not say that you have none of them
on your local machine. From reading your post, I was far from sure that you
do not have any linked table in your Access application at all. When you
have a problem, any detail count.

It is not a common problem.

Even less common than the problem of Access running slower
when the laptop is NOT connected to the network.

I wonder if:

1) Your laptop is doing something when you connect to the network.
Perhaps it is downloading service packs, or updating the anti-virus
database, or scanning the connected drives, or sending email, or
sending spam email from an infection or something?

2) Your laptop switches to a protected mode when it is connected
to the network, and anti-virus scanning switches on or something?

3) You have some unused linked tables that you haven't told us about?

4) Your drive assignments (D: E: or R: or Z:) change when you
connect to the network?

I don't get it. How can you switch network libraries-- I mean this
guy is using Access right? Not SQL Server?
