Access 97 totally nonfunctional

Help. I just installed Access 97 on a computer that is
currently running Office XP and Windows XP. (Access is in
Office Pro 97; all of the other Office 97 components work)
When I start Access, I get the following message:

can't find the database you specified, or you didn't
specify a database at all.

Specify a valid database name in the command line, and
include a path if necessary, so that can find the
application.

The preceeding two sentences are the verbatim message I'm
given; the first sentence starts in a lowercase letter,
and the second sentence has a space between "that"
and "can" This is inside a window that has an okay
button. Clicking okay terminates the application.

I've uninstalled Office Pro already, because I only
really need Access. However, even the custom install
fails to install Access properly, and Windows XP does not
inform me that I have installed a new program.

You must have some registry settings that are screwed up causing Access to
"think" it is a Runtime installation instead of a licensed version. These error
messages are raised when the Access Runtime is executed without specifying a
file name because the Runtime cannot be opened without a file like the licensed
version can.

Is Office XP the Small Business Edition by any chance? That actually includes
the Runtime of Access 2002.

I have a very similar problem with Access 97 - my Registry
settings are incorrect but I don't know how to change
them. My original post was titled Access2000 to 97...

Since reverting to Access97 I get error messages stating
that my Registry settings are incorrect - but no
indication of how to fix them. I did change the .mda in
the registry to .mdb but my problems persist e.g. a
database will only be saved using the first letter of its
name.

Well, I ended up uninstalling the 97 version, and the XP
edition. I installed Access 97 without any other Office
97 apps, and it was still non-functional with the
identical message. The good news is that I was able to
uninstall it and reinstall Office XP with no damage done.
However, the object of all of this was to get Access on
my computer. Any other ideas? Access seems to think it's
not there right after it's been installed. (Right now,
it's off.) (For what it's worth, the only app running
during the install was Quicktime.)
