Hi Brendan,

Curiosity got the best of me so I tried this out some more for fun.
Microsoft Camcorder installs and runs just fine on Windows ME.
The AVI output shows nothing but a blank screen.
However, compressing to an EXE file runs just fine on 98, ME, NT, and XP.
I'm pretty sure it will run on 2000 as well and I'll test that on Monday to be sure.
Just FYI.

use. I'll post those reviews here, in due course, if anyone is interested.

I've downloaded a half-dozen or so similar products, & am reviewing them for
my own use. So far, ms camcorder scores very well (against the others) for
similicity & usability. But some of the others have a humungous # of
features that are probably not in camcorder.

I'll post my reviews of the other products here, in due course, if anyone is
interested. Is anyone?

Do you know whether ms camcorder relies on any particular video codec being
present on the recording and/or playback PCs?

Given Camcorder's age I'm actually a little surprised to hear you say the simplicity and usability
is better than some of the other products. I would expect, as you mentioned, that the other products
would be full of extra 'goodies.'

I would love to hear any reviews you may have on the other products! Feel free to post back in this
thread or start a new one if you so desire.

I'm not sure if Camcorder requires any particular video codec for recording/playback. My recording
tests were on 98 and ME machines that had only the basic Windows OS installed and Office 97. I
cannot remember what the Media Player version was on my test machines. My tests on playback were on
98, NT, ME, and XP with pretty much all Windows Updates installed. I can test playback on 2000
tomorrow, but I'm sure it should work just fine.

I specifically remember viewing some pages either on Microsoft's site or on an XP machine that had
screen-capture recording used. They even talked about the program used. I've been racking my brain
trying to remember where I saw this, but no luck so far. I'll keep looking.

Thanks Jeff - I obviously mis-remembered about ME. It looks like it is on NT
and its successors, Windows 2000 and XP, that recording won't work.

Just FYI TC,

My old Help EXE screenshots made from Camcorder also work on Windows 2000 (with all updates).
Just tested them with no problems.
So they actually playback with no problems on 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.

Hi Jeff

The reviews that I promised, are still underway.

I have found an interesting thing, in passing: MS Camcorder is a general
purpose AVI-to-EXE converter!

Just open an arbitrary AVI file using File:Open, then re-save it using the
"save as standalone movie" option (or whatever it's called: I don't have
camcorder on this PC, to check). Voila!
