Access without MSDE

Is it possible to install Access without having MSDE being installed by
default? My boss says that if it is installed on a machine that also
contains SQL Server, the path for the SQL worm never will get installed on
the instance of SQL Server from MSDE and he doesn't want MSDE on our
machines. Anyone know if this is still a problem or how to not install MSDE?

AFAIK it is not installed by default. I have access 2000, 2002, and 2003
installed on my PC and no MSDE and I don't remember going out of my way to
prevent it being installed.
