Access97 in XP Pro problems

A

AlCamp

Recently moved my Access97 mdb applications from a Win98 system to a new
XP Pro system with 1GB of memory.

Both Access97 and Access2K are installed on the new machine, in seperate
directories, with seprate System.mdw's.

Was getting "out of memory" errors when starting Access97, so I installed
Jet35sp3.exe as recommended by the Knowledge Base.

OK on the "memory" problem... but now I'm getting weird intermittent
failures, that I feel are related to improper error handling.
one example... "Can't find MSJTER35.DLL" when generating errors in a
Totals/Pass-Thru query. There may have been an error in my calculations,
but this is not the correct error message.

Before going into greater detail on these weird failures, I'll just ask
if there is anything else I need to do to get A97 to run properly on an XP
Pro system.
If more specific failure information/examples are needed, I'll provide
them.

Any help will be appreciated. If I can't get A97 to run properly on XP,
I'm in real trouble.

Thanks,
Al Camp

Al,

Just recently I saw in the newsgroups that Access97 won't (or has trouble)
running on systems with 1GB+ of memory. This may be your problem. As I recall
there is a KB article on it. I'm sorry but I don't remember which newsgroup or
even when it was other than within the past month. I hope you can find the KB
article and go from there.

PC,
According to what I gathered from the KB, I thought Jet35sp3.exe was the
fix for that.
I'll try the KB again...
Thanks,

Al, I don't know. I just remembered seeing it and thought I'd mention it to you
to check out.

PC,
I appreciate your help. Hope you didn't think I was ungrateful for
your response.
I went back to the KB, but can't find a thing about problems with A97
with XP. I'm just not sure what I should be searching on.
I'm sure this must be an issue that other folks must have run into. Is
it that rare that someone would want to run A97 on XP?
I'll try some of the guru sites... Leban's, MVP, etc...
Thanks again,
Al Camp

Al,

Sorry for the slip of the finger on the previous response!
<<didn't think I was ungrateful >> No, not at all!

I rin Access97, 2000 and XP on WindowsXP Pro and they all run happily together.
I have 500K.

Al,

I just reread your immediate post - I don't think you are having a problem with
WinXP, it's the amount of RAM. I found the KB article. Look at 161255.

Steve,
That's right where I started from. I found that article, which was
exactly the original problem, downloaded the Jet 3.5 and installed it. I
think another problem is that my A97 has no service packs installed, and
that after installing and de-installing Access 97 so many times, trying to
solve this problem... it's totally screwed up!
Hell, I run un-install from the 97 CD, it says it un-installed, and all
my Access files are still right in C:\Access97\Office... including
MSAccess.exe!! What the heck kind of de-install program is that?

**Did you install SR-1 and SR-2 against A97 on your XP box??

I have Office Basic 2003 installed, along with A97 and A2K.

Perhaps I'll try installing SR1 & SR2 .... then try the 3.5Jet update
suggested in Q161255.

By the by, I removed half of my memory down to 512MB, and still got "out
of memory" errors. What a mess!

Thanks,
Al Camp

Al,

Another thing when you have multiple versions of Access is that they should be
installed in ascending order and in different folders. There's a KB article on
this. The alternative is that there are hoops to jump through if installing in
some other order.

Steve,
Yes, I read the KB article about installing A97 first and then A2K.
Right now, I have removed A2K, and will just try to stabilize A97 for now...
baby steps...
There's no doubt about it... somethings really screwy with the A97
Install/DeInstall. Files just aren't where they should be... and I always
install/uninstall to/from C:\Access97. Right now, I'm just barely up and
running A97, but I notice the my A97 directory contents don't match my old
A97 file dirs.
Here's my post from 6/2...
Then I ran into whacky un-installs (failed to un-install when it said it
did, only partially un-installed on another attempt. Just a series of
weird things.
I think something's causing problems with the A97 Install/Un-Install
software, and I wonder if it's the XP...

OK Steve... thanks for hangin' in with me so far.
I'm going to try to apply SR1 and SR2 and then the update to Jet 3.51.
Meanwhile, I'm limping along, and hope to get some work done in the next few
days. I'll probably start a new thread if that doesn't work. I don't
expect SR1 and Sr2 installation to be a cakewalk at all!!
Thanks,
Al Camp

After uninstalling, you should run offclean (it's in the valupack folder on
the CD). Also there is a utility you can download from microsoft called
eraser. Both these should be run to completely uninstall office.

Joan,
Thanks a lot!! I was looking for information on "making sure Access 97
is Un-Installed".
I found the KB article on all the files Access 97 installs, but since
some are shared with other apps... deleting those files looked a bit
dangerous.
I'll definitely check those suggestions out...
Thanks again,
Al Camp
