Access97 (Office Pro version) and Windows XP

I have a basic problem that someone must have had to work through before.

I had Microsoft Office97 Pro installed on my Dell 2650 under Windows XP
Home. Did absolutely nothing fancy other than to insert the CD and do the
autoinstall. Worked fine. Had a too-close of an encounter with one of the
virus plagues a few weeks back (inadvertantly had my antiviral on a 1 wk
update cycle!!), and when all was said and done (and the plague expunged),
MS Access would not work. Ive tried to reinstall the application as well as
the whole Office97 package. Ive even rebuilt the OS from scratch using the
original distribution disk and a complete reinstall of the updates from
Microsoft, and NOTHING seems to help.

The install off of the CD seems to run absolutely normal. No errors
whatsoever. MS Word, Excell and Powerpoint work fine. When I try to open
Access, either from the icon or by double clicking an Access database file,
I very quickly get a message in a MS Access dialog box that I am "Out of
Memory". When I click the OK, I get a second messagebox that says something
to the effect of "A system error has occured or there is insufficient
memory. Close other applications and try again." I have 750mb of RAM in
the machine and this error occurs even with NO other programs loaded. I
might think it to be a Access97/XP issue, but I have the exactly same
configuration at work, AND it even worked on the home machine prior to the
virus attack.

Any ideas at all?

I had the same experience about a year ago. The only thing that got everything
working again was to do a backup of all files on the computer, format the
harddrive, Reinstall Windows, reinstall all software and then reinstall all the
backedup files. When you say you rebuilt the OS from scratch, did you format the
harddrive? If you didn't the virus is still on your computer. I did what you did
first and uninstalled Windows and then reinstalled Windows only to discover that
I had not eliminated the virus.

Did not do the full lobotomy. May have to go that route if I dont hear some
REALLY
good ideas, although that actually was going to be my next step if I didnt
get any "good fixes".

Thanks for the insight though. . . .

Have you tried installing the jet 3.51 update/patch?
(fixes some "out of memory" issues)

Now THIS is strange! I went to the Microsoft download area to grab that
update (jet 3.51) and all of the text is in about 400pt font! Going to try
to reinstall Explorer and try again (google et all have normal sized
fonts!).

Is this some sort of lingering "benefit" of one of the viral hordes?
