Accessin files

Powerpoint version now in use: 4.0C
Version the file was created in:4.0
Windows version:98
Other hardware involved (printer, etc):none
Description of problem:
When I go to open a .ppt file I received, the program
states that it is not a PowerPoint presentation. Yet on
properties, the file is listed as a being a PowerPoint
4.0 presentation. I purchased and installed ppt 4.0
thinking there might be some compatibility issues. The
files still will not open.
The computer in use is a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop.
Since I have a new desktop, I tried to open the files on
it. A similar problem happens when I try to open the
files using the desktop and office 2003. If I go in using
PowerPoint to open the files, the message flashes up that
these are not a PPT program. However if I use "my
computer" to access the files, they open and say they are
a PowerPoint presentation.

I am confused and need advise.

You need to convet the old presentation to the newer format. Look here:
