act hrs displayed in server vs. act hrs submitted by resources

Can anybody out there think of a reason why MS Project would manipulate the
actual hours as recorded by resources?

For example, John Doe fills out his timesheet on Project Web Access for a
week's worth of work to a task, and records the following hours for Task A:
M: 4
T: 2
W: 1
T: 3
F: 5

I accept and update John's time, and somehow, this appears like this in the
Project Plan's Actual Work fields for that task:
M: 3.34
T: 2.56
W: .98
T: 2.79
F: 5.33

The week totals are correct, but the daily hours do not match what the
resource submitted and what I approved.

I'm stumped.

Check your settings in Project Web Access, Admin, Customize Project Web
Access, Tracking Settings.

It appears that you have the settings:
- Hours of work done per day or week (near top of page)
- Resources should report their total hours worked for a week (near bottom
of page)

Because of the second setting, Project "reallocates" the total hours over
the week. It treats the sum of the daily values as a single value, then
allocates it over the available timephased periods in MS Project-speak.

If you select Resources should report their hours worked every day it will
retain their daily values.

Note that this radio button refers to recording actuals by period (day or
week). This does not refer to how often they should click the Update button.
With the "worked every day" setting, they can still accumulate their updates
to the end of the week and submit only one update.
