Action msg when opening a Document

My OS is WinXP/HE with MS Office97 PE installed.
Nuisance: Whenever I open an *.doc I get the following action msg:-
C:\.........*.doc is being used by user. Do you want to make a copy?
OK or CANCEL
I have used Word97 on my older PC with WinME, and I did not get this msg.
Would someone please tell me how to stop it from appearing.

It sounds like your documents have "Read-Only" selected on them, you might
want to check the properties on your documents and 'de-select' that selection.
Did you happen to run the compatibility program within WinXP for the Word97
PE? WinXP might not like the fact that you are trying to run an older
program. If that doesn't fix it you might consider upgrading to at least
Office 2000.
