Activation - Installation of Office Standard 2007 on new computer

L

lfessler

I purchased Office Standard 2007 (Uprgade version) and installed it on my
current computer. I qualified for the upgrade version as I had a "Works"
qualifying version that came on my computer (now 4-1/2 years old), and I also
used the Beta version almost from the time is was available for use to the
public.

Question: I'm going to purchase a new system proibably Dell, or maybe
Gateway and when I get the new system how can I install the Office Standard
2007 upgrade version on the new system as their will be no software on the
new system that will qualify me to install the upgrade version.

What can I do to get Office installed onto my new system????

Would appreicate MS Technical person to provide me instructions on this.

Thank You !!!

1. Microsoft employees rarely ever post here.

2. You can't upgrade if you have nothing to upgrade from.

3. You are aware that you can't use one copy of the software on every
computer you own, right? There's a license agreement that states the terms
of that software license. Please read it.

Evidently you cannot understand what I said !!!!!!

I'm getting rid of my current computer and purchasing a new computer and I
will just own one computer not 27!!

Unless I cannot understand plain English, their is no restriction on me
loading my current software onto a new computer when I purchase it. My
current computer will be totally wiped clean and their will be nothing on the
hard drive and then I will junk the computer ---- it will not be sold or
given to someone else.

Now could you or someone else please answer my question !!!!!!!!

Thank You

To install the upgrade version, you must have a prior version to use as a
qualifier.
It does not have to be installed first.
When you install your new version, it will ask for a qualifying
version...take out the new version cd, insert the old version cd...and go
from there.

Evidently you cannot understand plain English!!! If your copy of
Microsoft Works came preinstalled on your old computer by the computer
manufacturer, then YES there probably IS a restriction on your loading
your current software onto a new computer when you purchase it!!!!!!!!
Did you read the End User License Agreement for your copy of Microsoft
Works, as Joanne suggested???? If it says the same thing as mine does,
then it says:

"Transfer. THIS LICENSE MAY NOT BE SHARED, TRANSFERRED TO OR USED
CONCURRENTLY ON DIFFERENT COMPUTERS. The Software is licensed with the
Computer as a single integrated product and may only be used with the
Computer."

This means you cannot transfer your copy of Microsoft Works from your
old computer to your new computer!!!!! This means you cannot use your
copy of Microsoft Works from your old computer as a qualifying product
for your Office 2007 upgrade on your new computer!!!!!!! And since you
say you don't have any other qualifying product on your new computer,
this means you cannot install your Office 2007 upgrade on your new
computer!!!!!!!!! Is this plain English enough for you?????

JoAnn Paules

Evidently you didn't read what you wrote!!!!!

Where do you say that you are getting rid of the first computer?

Now could you please stop yelling at me and using so many exclamation
points!!!!!!

Maybe you and your friend need to become better informed by reading the
response from "Tom Willett" above in the conversation. As both of you
reflect the credentials of "MVP" I would have presumed that you would have
told me the proper way to put my Office Standard 2007 onto my new computer
when I purchase it. I never had any intension of putting "Works" on my new
system!!!

FYI, I have communicated with a MS Tech by email and the information that
was provided by "Tom Willett" is IN FACT acurate and the correct way to
handle my issue when I purchase my new system. It also is the correct way to
re-load the software onto my current system in case I had to do so for some
reason. I removed WORKS From my current system a long time ago.

Thanks anyway guys maybe the two of you need to be better informed before
you float your MVP credentials out on the NET.

I do appreicate everyones response and truly am not trying to be NASTY, but
I get real concerned when I read things from and MVP only to find out later
they did not either understand my question or if they did they did not
provide me an accurate response.

Again thanks to everyone particuliarly "Tom Willett" for your responses.

G

garfield-n-odie [MVP]

The information Joann and I gave you IS accurate, albeit not what you
wanted to hear. Tom Willett gave you the mechanics of how to do what
you propose, while Joann and I tried to tell you it isn't legal to do
what you propose. Much like if you had asked how to rob a bank, and
someone told how to rob a bank, and I told you it isn't legal to rob a
bank, and you sling insults at me because I didn't tell you what you
wanted to hear.

Upgrade versions of Office require that you have a qualifying product to
upgrade from. If your intent is to use Works from your old computer as
a qualifying product to install Office 2007 upgrade on your new
computer, then regardless of whether or not you physically install the
qualifying product on the new computer, you are effectively transferring
the license for the qualifying product to the new computer. Joann and I
suggested that you read your Works EULA to see whether you can legally
transfer the software as a qualifying product to your new computer, but
you ignored us, so for your benefit I quoted what my Works EULA says.
And quoting from the Office 2007 Standard Edition EULA:

"11. UPGRADE OR CONVERSION. To upgrade or convert software, you must
first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade or
conversion. Upon upgrade or conversion, this agreement takes the place
of the agreement for the software you upgraded or converted from. After
you upgrade or convert, you may no longer use the earlier version of the
software you upgraded or converted from."

If your Works EULA says the same thing as mine does, then your new
computer is not licensed for the software (Works from your old computer)
that is eligible for the upgrade. If you want to rob a bank, then you
already know how, but it doesn't mean it is okay to do so.

Nasty? Maybe you don't get the meaning of all the !!!!! and ????? and
derogatory comments in your second and third posts. If you're truly not
trying to be nasty, then you're just naturally that way, and it truly
shows.

L

lfessler

You are certainly entitled to voice your opinon of me and lets agree to
disagree relative to me being nasty or not. If you want an apoligy, then I
apoligize to both of you.

Unfotrunately in your response you did not address the
conversation/instructions that I received from MS Technical Support. In that
conversation the lady plainly stated how I should do it and ------- VERY
SPECIFICALLY ----- told me that was acceptable, and would not violate any MS
license agreements, because I owned the software and was only going to have
it active (installed) on one computer. Presumably what she told me happens
frequently when people change computers and at least her knowledge/opinion is
that I can do it.

If I still had the email I would forward it to you so you could read it your
self. Unfortunately I do not keep emails but for a short period of time and
simply printed off the instructions I was given and then deleted the response.

But you open a whole new can of worms for me in that your have given me
instructions on what your opinion is that I can not do and the MS technical
folks have given me instructions that are 180 degrees different than yours.

Pray tell what does a crusty old geezer like me do now, and who is right and
who is wrong. I would NEVER knowingly violate any of MS license agreements
intentionally!

G

garfield-n-odie [MVP]

This is a peer-to-peer forum where Office users try to help fellow
Office users who have questions. Tom, Joann, and I are all volunteers
here... we don't work for Microsoft, even though Microsoft has awarded
us MVP status for sharing our knowledge and experience here and/or
elsewhere. Joann and I suggested that you read your Works EULA because
some software versions are transferrable to other computers and some
software versions are not. Whatever you decide to do is entirely up to
you... we are not the software police. From a mechanical standpoint,
what Tom told you should work.

L

lfessler

I sincerely thank all of you for your information. I did read the EULA, in
fact twice and could not find anything that indicated that I could not load
the software onto another computer.

It was never my intent to irritate anyone nor question anyones
qualifications. I was merely trying to get and answer and after the somewhat
heated responses (which I probably deserved) I had to go to MS because I
wanted to know my legal entitlements and certainly would never intentionally
do anything to put unauthorized software on my computer.

Again thanks to all for your comments and assistance -- Larry
