Actual Work and Percent Complete for a Task

I have a task which takes 2 hours to complete and is to be done over a
period (duration) of 5 days. After a day, I set the actual work for
the task to 1 hour. A couple of days later, the second hour of work
has been done and the task is complete, so I set the percent complete
to 100%. Actual work is immediately set to 40 hours, 5 days times 8
hours per day. How should I set up the task so that the duration is 5
days, but 100% of the work is 2 hours?

Thanks, Jim

Here's an approach which that I think might work in solving your problem:

1. Type the name of the task and leave its Duration at the default of 1 day
2. Make sure the task is selected, then click Window - Split
3. In the lower viewing pane, set the Task Type as Fixed Work and click OK
4. In the lower pane, select a Resource Name, set the Units to 5%, and set
the Work to 2 hours
5. Click OK and the Duration will be calculated at 5 days

This accomplishes your first requirement, which is to show that
approximately 2 hours of work will be performed over a 5-day period of time.
Secondly, when you enter 2 hours of Actual Work on this task, it will be
marked as 100% complete automatically, since only 2 hours of work were
allocated initially. Hope this helps.
