Add button from Toolbox - On Click event produces error on it's ow

Hi,
Access 2003, Windows XP pro

I have a very simple form that shows customer name and email address. I am
adding a button from the Toolbox to delete a record. Whether I use the wizard
or not I get the same error. For any event I get the following error (with no
code written in the event procedure):

****************************************************************
The expression (event) you entered as the event property setting produced
the following error: A problem occurred while (database) was communicating
with the OLE server or ActiveX control.

* the expression may not result in the name of a macro, the name of a user
defined function, or [Event Procedure]
* There may have been an error evaluating the function, event, or macro

****************************************************************

The suggested causes are inappropriate (no missing references, expression
cannot be misspelled as there are no expressions) and I have the latest
version of Jet 4.0

I have tried moving the database to another PC running Access 2002/Windows
2000 and Compact/Repair with no joy.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance,
Ken
