Add custom cost rate to rate tables

I work for a services firm with multiple projects at one client. As with most services firms our cost rates and bill rates both increase over time. With the standard setup, project allows me to maintain the cost rate in the rate table where I am customizing it to change on specific dates so I'm fine there. I've used a custom cost field to display the bill rates for each resource so we can calculate the profit margin at the resource level (Bill Rate - Standard Cost Rate). This forecasting become difficult when projects span a time frame in which Bill Rates and Standard Cost Rates change. I need the functionality to set multiple rates at various periods using an effective date for both Standard Cost and a custom cost field.

Example
Effective Date: 10/1/2009 / Standard Rate = $100 / Custom Cost = $75

Effective Date: 1/1/2010 / Sandard Rate = $110 /Custom Cost = $90

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

To clarify - I need to figure out a way to get a custom cost added to the rate table if possible.

HI,

I use Rate A for the Customer Cost and Rate B for internal cost. When I need
a Margin report, I:
View the Resource Usage View
Insert Cost Rate Table column
Change all rates to B (internal cost)
View Gantt Chart and apply Cost Table
Insert Cost1 Custom Field and rename it Internal Cost
Copy Cost Column onto Cost1 column
Re-apply Rate A using instructions above
Insert Cost2 Column and create a Formula [Cost]-[cost1] This calculates the
margin

the Cost Table can have the Cost1 and Cost2 fields in permanently and if I
need to run this a number of time, I record a macro of me doing it manually,
adjust as required and then run the macro as required. In fact this is one
of the example macros in my book!
