Add existing email to new contact

I am trying to add an email address to a contact which I
allready have in another personal address book and I get
the error "An Outlook Address Book entry cannot be used as
an email address in a contact" Why is this? Is there any
way round it other than copying & pasting the address?

You need to clarify what you are doing and in what version of Outlook.

I'm in Outlook 2000 sr1 and have created a new contact,
I would like to use the address book icon and pick up an
email address from another address book but I get the
error "An Outlook Address Book entry cannot be used as
an email address in a contact". Any suggestions?

That's because there is no Address Book in Outlook. The Address Book is
merely a view of your Contacts Folder. That's why you get that error
message.
Enter and edit data in the Contacts Folder(s), not the Address Book view.
