add rag status red,amber, green

I want to add a column that will show red, green, amber,
and blue according to %complete and the finish date.
Any tips

Create a customised field, and use one of the graphical indicators
(coloured) to display based on your algorithm for testing %complete and
finish date. See "help" where graphical indicators are fully described.

I've not gotten past the Graphical indicators testing. It
comes back with "the entry is not valid - test value
cannot be used with the field for the data you want to
find or filter for."

This happens to all test except "is any value". It seems
that I need to create a formula, which is out of my
league. Do you recommend a good book on creating
formulas?
