I use Office 08 for Mac and as long as I have been using Office, which is a long time, I have always been able to add a word to my dictionary by right clicking the misspelled word and clicking Add to Dictionary. However, I can't seem to get that option to become active when I right click a misspelled word. Can anyone help? I have gone into Preferences and I couldn't find anything there. If I missed something please let me know. Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Kindest Regards

I assume you already HAVE a Custom Dictionary if it has been working
before...

There is a new bug that corrupts the Custom Dictionary if any high-range
Unicode characters get in there.

The cure is to "Edit" the custom dictionary in Word in the usual manner.
Scan it for any funny characters and remove them. If there weren't any, add
and remove a space, then SAVE and turn your spelling back on.

That re-saves the Custom Dictionary in the correct character set. After
that, your Add to Custom Dictionary should come back to life.

There's one other thing you need to check: The "Language" of the Custom
Dictionary must either be "No Language" or it must exactly match the
language marked in the text you are trying to spell.

Word can mark language word-by-word, for example enabling you to include
French words in an English document. Word switches the main dictionaries in
and out on the fly to complete the spell checking.

However, to use this feature you must do one of two things:

A) set your Custom Dictionary to "No Language" which means it will work with
ANY main dictionary.

B) Create a different custom dictionary for each language you want to use.

Either will work. My recommendation is to do the first because it's much
less bother. However, if you want to include words that are correctly
spelled in one language but a spelling mistayke in another, you need
multiple custom dictionaries.

What may have happened to cause your current difficulty is that you have Set
your custom dictionary to, for example, "English US" and now you have a
document containing some parts that have been pasted from a document or web
page that was in English UK. Those parts of the text will be marked with
English UK, and that will prevent Word from adding words from that part of
the text into your custom dictionary.

The cure would be to set your custom dictionary to "No Language" which will
enable it to accept words from text in any language.

Hope this helps
