Add Users

I feel like I've been all over inside and out of my project server
2007 test install but somehow I'm just not "getting" it.

How the heck do you add a regular domain user so they can open MS
Project '07 from their pc, point to my server and start creating their
own projects?

I mean, I made it through the sql, sharepoint, & server install,
configured olap, cube, enterprise resource sync... you'd think this
simple thing would poke my eye out?

Log into PWA as an admin. go to server settings and look at the upper left
of the screen, there are links to manage users and manage groups. Follow
those and add a new user.

Next, have the user install Project Pro on their machine. It is a separate
application and needs to be installed before you can work with it.

Finally, open Project Pro and from the tools menu, select Enterprise
Options, then Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts. Enter the URL for
the Project PWA site and set it the way you like. Then close Project
Professional and restart it. If you have set the account you just created to
be the default and set the auto-connect option then it will connect to
Project Server.

OK, thanks for your reply.

Instead of getting lost in the add user settings, I created an Active
Directory group, set some users in the group then used Active
Directory Sync to pull them in. Then I installed & configured Project
2007 on a client pc.

These users can open the PWA site with IE but when they use Project
2007, they get a dialog Could not access Enterprise Global. Possible
reasons: You do not have sufficient permissions to access the
Enterprise Global. or there is a problem with the Enterprise Global in
the database.

I don't recall seeing settable permissions when using the AD sync
so... What controls their ability to use Project 2007 on a client pc
and what is a recommended setting for a person who is just going to
update project plans?

It sounds like you did an Active Directory sync under PWA's Server
Settings>Active Directory Enterprise Resource Pool Synchronization.

If so, then you have essentially created some enterprise resources and by
default it also creates user accounts for these resources and adds them to
the out-of-the-box security group called "Team Members" located in PWA's
Server Settings>Manage Groups. This would explain why these users can at
the very least log into PWA but not into Pro.

To answer your question, permissions are not set in Active Directory sync,
they are set in Manage Users, Manage Groups and Manage Categories. There
are hundreds of permissions settings that can be set to make for a complex
security structure. Out-of-the-box, however, there are is a pre-defined
security structure that takes into account many roles you might find in your
organization (i.e. Team Members, Team Leads, Resource Managers, Project
Managers, Portfolio Managers, Executives, Administrators)

The simplest way I can suggest for your project users to gain access to the
server from the client is to go into PWA's Server Settings>Manage Groups,
click on Project Managers and add the specific users you want to be able to
log into Project Pro and update project plans.
