I assume you're using MS Word?
After inserting the picture, you can click it, then you'll see little black
squares in the corners. You can use these to resize the picture.
Then, if it's not already visible, right-click on the picture and click
"show picture toolbar." It has a variety of tools that allow you to crop and
lighten/darken the image. It also allows you to control how words "wrap"
around the image. I've found that "tight" gives the best fit for my
documents. (Pun intended.)
