Adding an external program button to toolbar

Is there a way to add an external program as a button to an Excel or Word (XP
or 2003) toolbar? Perhaps, adding a button to run Paint or Acrobat.

I'm looking for an easy way, without writing some kind of COM?

R-click, the Toolbar and select customize, in the righthand pane of
Commands, left click and drag an icon up to one of the taskbars, R-click
the button you dropped and select Hyperlink, point the hyperlink at the
exe for the app you want to open.
