Adding free text to a chart

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I created a line chart in Excel then inserted text. I am making comments about the lines - you see these a lot on stock charts where the author may point out an event.

However, when I copy and paste the chart to Word the text is not there. I tried moving the chart on the spreadsheet and the text box does not move with the chart.

I must be doing something wrong how does one annotated with text a chart?

Don't use the TextBox tool. When you've got the chart selected, just
start typing in the formula bar. Hit Enter and a text box will showup
that 'belongs' to the chart.

The suggestion to type into the formula bar with the chart selected is not working. The input area of the formula bar is not accepting input. The fx is grey.

pgflrob -

First, click just inside the border of the chart to select it. Second, click
the Text Box icon on the Drawing toolbar. Third, click and drag somewhere
inside the chart. Fourth, type desired text.

It's important to select the chart first. Otherwise, the text box is on the
underlying worksheet instead of on the chart.

Ahhh, the drawing tool bar. The formatting pallet confused the heck out of me. I thought all the drawing stuff moved there. Thanks.

Oddly enough the Text Box tool is the one tool that isn't included in the
Object Palette of the Toolbox -- go figure 8-} But don't forget that
virtually any of the AutoShapes can be used as text boxes... And there is a
special group of Callout tools that serve very well for annotating charts.
