How do you get the guide to stay? when I let go of the option key, it
seems to go away

Make sure you release the mouse button before 'letting go' of the Option
key. The key acts as a modifier to alter the behavior of the mouse. Always
complete execution of the operation before releasing any modifier keys that
are involved.
