Adding music from file corrupts my PP pres. How do I fix?

I created a powerpoint presentation(in PP2003 on WindowsXP Pro) with music
and the autoplay option. It worked, I made a few copies on disk. Later, I
went back and added some pictures, modified a few others(cropping and
brightness adjustments in PP), and changed the music. First of all, it would
not allow me to pick songs from my iTunes library even though it's the PC
version of iTunes and the songs are in mp3 format. I got the song I wanted in
to the presentation by extracting it from CD in to Yahoo Music Jukebox and
then inserted it in to the pres. However, now the timing that I had set for
the pres is not being used, and if I try to advance form the first slide
manually, the music stops the first time I hit the arrow key and the second
time I hit it, the next slide appears with no music and no timing. The
troubleshooting I did involved double-checking all the settings (reset
timings, reset transitions, went to the setup show widow and checked to see
if anything had changed, etc.) and then started on the music file itself; I
removed it all together and the PP pres worked with timings immediately. I
tried several other songs and file types(WAV) and nothing worked. The only
way for the pres to run with timed intervals on the slides is to remove the
music and that is not a viable alternative for me. Have you ever seen or
heard of anything like this, and if so, did you see or hear a solution?
