adding narration

i have a complete slide show ready. but i want a narritve as soon as the
person opens the show/slide. at present i am just using an 'action' when
person hovers over text. i do not want to use this. however, when i try to
'record narration' the button is greyed out and i cant use it. can you
please help me. bit of a newbie.
