Adding new words to the Word Dictionary

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I type a new word which the dictionary does not recognise, I try to add the word, but find the "Add" button greyed out. Any suggestions as to how to turn the Add button back on?
