Adding resources

C

Chris Roche

Hello All,

I am really new at Project, actually just picked it up
yesterday, but I was hoping for some guidance. I am
working on a project where I have to assign people to
jobs. These people work on varying jobs on offshore oil
wells. I have the wells separated and dated and the two
main components of each well listed. My problem now is I
was given a calendar with the number of people working
each day. How do I translate that onto my taks. I named
the resource Employees thinking I could assign any number
to a job, however that wasn't the case. Should I have each
employee as a separate resource. Also is there a way I ca
go day by day to assign people?

Thanks for any help you can provide

Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Well, you've asked in depth questions that require a deep knowledge of
Project. I can only recommend you attend a course on project management
first, followed by an introductory course on Project. This is the ONLY way
to get up and running quickly and efficiently.

However, to attempt an answer. You can assign resources to tasks either as
a generic resource (eg Engineers) or as individuals, but not as both. There
are several ways to do this, but I prefer using the Gantt Chart view,
Windows/Split, and in the lower pane you can see all the elements of the
equation Work=Units x Duration. You need to know any two of these and
Project will calculate the other. Enter the resource name (100% is one
person, 200% is 2, etc) and the other data, but don't press OK or the Enter
button until you have got all the figures correct whence Project will do the
calculations. Then you can investigate Tools/Change Working Time to set up
individual calendars. You can also use the Resource Usage view to enter
daily requirements, but this will take a considerable management effort.
When you've had your course, you can then go into the fun (!) of Effort
Driven and Fixed Duration, Units and Work. Good luck!

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)
