Adding sound to PowerPoint Slide Show

I am using PowerPoint 2003 with Windows XP Home.
I cannot insert sound because the Movies & Sound expanded menu is 'greyed
out' when using the 'Insert' menu. Also the 'Custom Animation' diaogue box
in the Slide Show menu is 'greyed out'.
Any suggestions please?

Kandj,
Go to Tools - options - on the edit tab uncheck all options at the bottom of
your dialogue which relate to the new powerpoint items.

It sounds like you are in the Slide Sorter view. Go to View > Normal and the
items will not be grayed out. You must be viewing an individual slide in order
to add sound or animation.

Kandj,
It just dawned on me you are talking about the menu and not the task pane.
It could be you are in the slide sorter view, try switching to normal view.
