Adding text to a sentence instead of overwriting existing text

I am having difficulty with Word. All documents are not allowing insertion of
new text into existing text without overwriting the existing text. I haven't
been able to find any help within the Word database for this problem. If
anyone has the answer, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
My product is Word 2002. Operating system is Microsoft Windows XP

Press the INS key to get out of overtype mode. Or double-click the letters
OVR in the status bar at the bottom so they go from black to gray.
