Adding to document

Occasionally when adding text to a document the new text deletes the text following. How do I correct

Make sure you don't have the following text selected and that you're not in overtype mode.

It's what you toggle on/off when you press the Insert key. If you right-click on Word's status bar, you can add the Overtype alert to it.
