Adding updatable columns to the timesheet

I see that I can add columns to the timesheet such as Actual Start, but I cannot find a way to allow the user to actually enter information into that column. It appears that the column is updated based on the reporting period that am I in.
Is that how the Actual Date is generated?
Is there a way to actually enter and Actual Start / Finish?

What version of Project Server are you using? How did you add the Actual
Start column to the timesheet? My answer depends on your answers.
