adding web folders

M

Mitch

I need to add a web folder to "My Network Places" in order to edit the site
with FrontPage. The problem is that the site does not have a "www" hostname.
So, instead of http://www.domain.com it's http://other.domain.com Whenever I
attempt to add the site as a new folder, it creates the link as a local
folder, not a web one.

Open FrontPage, browse to and open the folder and it "should" be added to Network Places.

Open the site in IE, then File Menu | Edit with FP and the folder will (should) be created in My
Network Places.

It doesn't try to create the folder until "Save" is clicked. Then I'm put
into the "My Network Places" folder and given the chioce of what folder to
save it in. Since the website has no folder/link to it yet, I need to create
it. When I try to, it gets saved as a local link.

I have created new web folder links to actual sites with no problems, as
long as they follow the www.domain.com format. Following the exact same steps
for a site not starting in "www" always results in a local link. I have never
had this problem with previous versions of FrontPage.

In the field, type in http://other.domain.com

In general FP doesn't really work well with subdomains. The normal/best method it to always access
it as a subweb/subsite under the root web when you need to access it from FP.

So for browsers it would be
http://other.domain.com
for FP it would be
http://www.domain.com/other

This isn't a subdomain, it's an independent site, the only difference is that
the hostname is something other than "www". This hasn't been a problem with
any previous version of FrontPage.

http://other.domain.com is a subdomain.

Here is a brief explanation of subdomains:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/subdomains/subdomains-01.html

Create it a FP subweb, then use DNS to point to the subweb as a subdomainny access it from FP as
http://www.domain.com/subweb and you will eliminate your current issues.

Although some may consider "other" to be a subdomain, as the most specific
portion of the address, it is a hostname. If the address was
server.other.domain.com, "other" would be a subdomain and "server" would be
the hostname. I have a fair amount of experience in building networks and DNS
administration, so am somewhat familiar with the terminology.
I have been able to create web folders for domains with different
hostnames with no problems for the last 8 years or so in all previous
versions of FrontPage and would prefer to continue it the same way with
FrontPage 2003 rather than having to map a subweb from the primary domain.
Don't take this the wrong way, I am grateful for your taking the time to
assist me, but I'm somewhat annoyed that FrontPage no longer seems to do what
it's done fine for years, and as a result I've got to hack together a
workaround. To me that's progress in the wrong direction.

If you can open the site directly in FP2000 or FP2002 via File Menu | Web under the FP2000/2002
extensions, then you should not have a problem open it directly in FP via File Menu | Open Site,
unless a security update has made some changes.

That may be the issue. I did find the old shortcut from where FP2000
deposited it, and copied it into the current Network Places folder, but it
won't open that way either, apparently the shortcut is tied to a previous
FrontPage .dll that's been deleted. I'm doing some playing around to see if
there's a way to import the old shortcut.

Delete the network place you created
Can you open the web in FP using File Open Web/Site and entering the URL
http://other.domain.com or http://www.other.domain.com/
Or browse to it in IE and use File Edit w/ FP
If so
Run Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks and close the web in FP
- There should be a valid network place for the web
If not, check w/ your host on the IP address for the site and try opening it that way

My apologies to everyone, I'm an idiot. I tried adding another site on a
non-standard host and it worked fine. Apparently the problem is in the
extensions on the server itself. I'm working on that now.

"Thanks" to all who have offered assistance.
