Address book contacts not alphabetical.

The contacts in my Entourage Address Book start at 'N' and then go alphabetically through 'Z' and then on to 'M'. I have checked the individual contacts and they are all correctly entered. The correct field (Name) is checked for sorting.

Are these special contacts such as companies? If you enable Sync Services,
you might see that these contacts do not get sorted by their names, but by
their creation dates. This is a bug.

Also, keep in mind that while Entourage displays contacts by "First name,
Last name", it actually sorts them by last name.

Thanks for your reply.

No, they're not companies. Those are grouped separately at the top. This was happening before I enabled Sync Services. Also, I am aware of the application sorting by last name - these contacts are perfectly listed except for the fact that they start at 'N' and end at 'M'.

I tried using First Name and Last Name in the view and that worked, but I don't really like that view because it takes up more space and anyway I would just like to know why it does this.

Check that there isn't a space before that offending contact name (eg _Nancy
where _ is in place for the offending space). (assuming its only one contact
sorted out of place)... This has happened to me :D

I have the same problems with alphabetizing in Entourage - I can't figure out what rules it is using. It seems names are sorted by last name, companies are sorted maybe by edit date. Some companies are listed at the top, and some mixed in. This has got to be the most frustrating address book I've ever used. Is there any way to force Entourage to alphabetize every entry the same way? And please, is there any way to get it to sort last name, first name. The whole address book is very disconcerting.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I seem to have solved the problem, though I'd still love to know what caused it. I exported my address book to my desktop as an archive (.rge file) checking the option to delete all my contacts after successful export. I then reimported them and they are all in the correct order now. Does that help in understanding the problem?
