Address Book Missing

D

dale1948

I've been trying to get an answer on this for over one week, and I think Russ
may have given up on me.

I've been using Outlook 2007 for 1 year without any problems. Then all of a
sudden, my address book does not show any of my contacts. I've successfully
created several new profiles, and still nothing.

I've seen several other posts that seem to indicate that this is not uncommon.

Help, please!

Thanks!

Dale

I didn't give up. I told you what the next steps to take were and you never
posted back with the results or the information I requested. No need to
start all over with a new thread.

Hi Russ,

I did send 2 additional posts on the 13th and din't hear back. Sorry, I
thought you gave up on me.

I've followed your instructions precisely, i.e., set up new profile, and
address book doesn't show up. Could it be anything else?

No, I don't think so. As I said, I suspect you either didn't create the new
profile correctly or you didn't migrate your data to the new profile
correctly. That's why I asked you for the precise steps you used so we could
figure out what went wrong.

Hi Russ,

I followed the exact procedure as outlined in MS Article # 829918, "How to
create and configure an e-mail profile..." At this point, I have Outlook to
prompt for a specific profile. But I do have a question about this article;
nowhere does it mention if I need a new e-mail address for the new profile. I
assume no, and used my current address.

Next, I followed the procedure that you had sent me earlier, MS Article
287563.

I have done the above, and undone, several times. I still have no address
book.

I've asked this question several times, with no answer. In the properties
box of my contact folder bothe the check box and the "Show this folder as my
e-mail address book..." are light gray. What does this mean?

Hi Brian,

To Add a new profile, I went to the Control Panel>Mail>Show Profiles>Add (I
typed in a new name for profile), and entered account settings, using my
existing e-mail address. I tested connection and got a successful indication.
I then went back to the Mail Setup window, where I started this process,
clicked on the new profile in Show Profiles>properties>data files , and saw
that the default folder was Outlook 8.pst. As I said in an earlier post, I
created and undid profiles a number of times.

I restarted Outlook, chose the new profile then clicked on Contacts
tab>File>Folder>Properties>Outlook Address Book. Contacts was the name of the
address book, the box was checked but light gray.

I confirmed that I actually received an e-mail in my in box of the new
profile from the test connection.

Where did I go wrong? There is nothing in the address book (Contacts) of
either the original profile, or the new one I created.

No where in the above do you mention adding the Outlook Address Book service

Brian,

I'm not sure what you mean about adding Outlook Address Book service. In the
properties of the new profile, if I click on adress book, Outlook Address
Book is listed, Type MAPI. If I need to do something else, can you tell me
what, how?

Thanks!

dale1948

Brian,

There is post listed just below mine detailing the same problem in Outlook
2003. Russ suugests removing the Outlook Address Book. Closing Outlook, then
open and add back to new profile. The new profile does list the Outlook
Address Book, but it won't let me delete.

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

But by your description you created a new data file that would be empty, so
of course nothing would show in the address book view.

Outlook 2003 allows one to remove the OAB service from a mail profile and
add it in again. Outlook 2007, unfortunately does not allow the OAB service
removal for an automatically created profile (i.e., install time or Windows
Easy Transfer-created). When you create a new one, though, the OAB service
shouldn't be there automatically. It didn't seem to be for me when I tried
it. That's the standard way for fixing a mail profile where the OAB service
is malfunctioning - Add a new profile to which you must explicitly add the
OAB service because it's not included by default. I'll have to check again
on my OL 2007 system.

No, after I created the new profile, and checked the data file tab, it listed
Outlook8.pst. When I clicked on address book tab, Outlook Address Book was
listed, and when I clicked on change, it showed Personal Folders: Contacts. I
added nothing, it showed up when I created the profile.

You missed my point. Outlook8.pst is an empty PST file created automatically
by the new profile. It contains no data so of course your address book view
is empty. So is your Contacts Folder. You have to populate your Contacts
Folder before anything can show up in the address book view either by
creating new Contacts or migrating your old data file to the new profile.

Russ,

I was previously able to, and have created a backup pst file.

I read through the articles you suggested, and the third on looked the most
promising but, it applies to OL 2003, and I was unable to duplicate the steps.

I want to be clear on what's happened as a rewsult of our conversations.
When I created the new profile, it automatically picked up the on and only
pst file I had. When I opoen OL using the new profile, my original in box,
sent items, calender and contacts show up. But, it is not "linking" to the
address book, as in my original profile.

When I check properties on the contacts folder in both profiles, it
indicates that the OL Address Book, is "Contacts", but nothing is listed in
the address book of either profile.

That's not what a new Outlook profile does if you've created it correctly.
It creates a new, empty PST file because it has no knowledge of any other
PST files.
The only proper way to connect to an previous Outlook data file is to open
it in Outlook, then set it as your default, restart Outlook, then close the
new, empty PST file the new profile created. It's all explained in the

Russ,

I appreciate your time.

Instead of giving me a step by step description of what I'm supposed to be
doing, you send me articles which, I appreciate and read but, most do not
address my problem. I've given you, several times, the step by step process
I've followed and instead of giving me specific corrective steps you refer me
another article or simply say I didn't follow the recommendations of your
post. I realize I'm way beneath you concerning IT but, I'm not an idot, I run
a $500 million business.

If you don't have the patience to talk with someone way beneath you, please
refer me to someone else.

Thanks!

Outlook8.pst. When I clicked on address book tab, Outlook Address
Book
was
listed, and when I clicked on change, it showed Personal Folders:
Contacts. I
added nothing, it showed up when I created the profile.

:

But by your description you created a new data file that would be
empty,
so
of course nothing would show in the address book view.

Hi Brian,

To Add a new profile, I went to the Control Panel>Mail>Show
Profiles>Add
(I
typed in a new name for profile), and entered account settings,
using
my
existing e-mail address. I tested connection and got a successful
indication.
I then went back to the Mail Setup window, where I started this
process,
clicked on the new profile in Show Profiles>properties>data files
,
and
saw
that the default folder was Outlook 8.pst. As I said in an
earlier
post, I
created and undid profiles a number of times.

I restarted Outlook, chose the new profile then clicked on
Contacts
tab>File>Folder>Properties>Outlook Address Book. Contacts was the
name
of
the
address book, the box was checked but light gray.

I confirmed that I actually received an e-mail in my in box of
the
new
profile from the test connection.

Where did I go wrong? There is nothing in the address book
(Contacts)
of
either the original profile, or the new one I created.

I've been trying to get an answer on this for over one week,
and
I
think
Russ
may have given up on me.

I've been using Outlook 2007 for 1 year without any problems.
Then
all
of
a
sudden, my address book does not show any of my contacts. I've
successfully
created several new profiles, and still nothing.

Please describe the EXACT steps you used to create a new
profile,
add
your
data store to it, and configure your address book service.

Unfortunately, you've never really provided a clear delineation of the
actual steps you've used other than to say that you've followed the steps in
the articles. But each time I drill down to the actual steps you've used, I
discover that you haven't followed the steps in the article correctly or
have misinterpreted them. The fact that a new profile you create contains
links to old data confirms you couldn't have followed the instructions. And
renaming a PST file is not a step in any process, is never recommended and
always corrupts the profile.
I can't post step by step instructions that are any clearer than the KB
articles nor can I anticipate how you will follow those instructions. Sorry.
Newgroups are not a very effective medium for troubleshooting complicated
processes. Why not call PSS so someone can help you real time while watching
what you're doing?

Russ,

I appreciate your time.

Instead of giving me a step by step description of what I'm supposed to be
doing, you send me articles which, I appreciate and read but, most do not
address my problem. I've given you, several times, the step by step
process
I've followed and instead of giving me specific corrective steps you refer
me
another article or simply say I didn't follow the recommendations of your
post. I realize I'm way beneath you concerning IT but, I'm not an idot, I
run
a $500 million business.

If you don't have the patience to talk with someone way beneath you,
please
refer me to someone else.

Thanks!

That's not what a new Outlook profile does if you've created it
correctly.
It creates a new, empty PST file because it has no knowledge of any other
PST files.
The only proper way to connect to an previous Outlook data file is to
open
it in Outlook, then set it as your default, restart Outlook, then close
the
new, empty PST file the new profile created. It's all explained in the
articles I posted.

Russ,

I was previously able to, and have created a backup pst file.

I read through the articles you suggested, and the third on looked the
most
promising but, it applies to OL 2003, and I was unable to duplicate the
steps.

I want to be clear on what's happened as a rewsult of our
conversations.
When I created the new profile, it automatically picked up the on and
only
pst file I had. When I opoen OL using the new profile, my original in
box,
sent items, calender and contacts show up. But, it is not "linking" to
the
address book, as in my original profile.

When I check properties on the contacts folder in both profiles, it
indicates that the OL Address Book, is "Contacts", but nothing is
listed
in
the address book of either profile.

Russ,

Please describe, in detail, the process to "migrate" my old
Outlook.pst
file
to the new profile. Can I just change the file name from
Outlook8.pst
to
Outlook.pst?

:

You missed my point. Outlook8.pst is an empty PST file created
automatically
by the new profile. It contains no data so of course your address
book
view
is empty. So is your Contacts Folder. You have to populate your
Contacts
Folder before anything can show up in the address book view either
by
creating new Contacts or migrating your old data file to the new
profile.
