address list won't display

Huck Rorick

When I am sending an email message and I click "To." I get the message "The
Address List Could not be displayed".
I click "OK" and the "Select Names" dialog box comes up.
I click on the arrow at "Show Names from the:"
It lists "Contacts" about 5 times.
I select the last "Contacts" and then the address list comes up.
Anyone know what is happening and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Huck

Of course.
Post your Outlook version and tell us the steps you used to disconnect your
Outlook Address Book Service.

I'm using Outlook 2002.
I'm not sure what you mean "disconnect your Outlook Address Book Service".
I'm not aware that I disconnected it.
Something I did that I think might be related in some way is to copy my
PersonalFolders .pst file from one computer to another.
But why does the "Show Names from the:" think there are a bunch of
"Contacts". And why does only one of them have any addresses in it? And
how would I get rid of the others?

Huck

PS sorry about posting twice. I didn't see the post the first time I logged
back on to the newsgroup, so I posted it again.

You must have done something to your Contact data to get into this state. It
is worth remembering that the Outlook Address Book is a deeply dumb utility.
Anytime you import Contacts, move your PST file, or open another PST file,
the OAB will completely lose track of which Contacts Folder it is supposed
to display and go into a state of confusion.

When that happens, the easiest thing to do is simply defibrillate it: remove
it completely from your profile, restart Outlook, add it back, point it to
the Folders you want it to display and
restart Outlook again. Rest assured that the Outlook Address Book contains
no data (I would never trust it to) and can safely be removed and re-added
without affecting your data.

You can accomplish all this here: Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change
existing directories or address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. >
