adjusting calendar without changing the duration

hi,

i got several msp files by my collegues without resource planning. Now
i want to add resource planning and have to adjust the canlendars.
Therefore, i set the dailywork from 8hrs to 6,4hrs and the weeklywork
from 40hrs to 32hrs. However, as i do that, i dont want, that the
existing dates and durations change. Everything shall stay the same,
except that i define the working hrs new, to calculate the needed
manpower later.

How can i do that?

Furthermore, another question. Why can i define a workday from 8am to
5pm with an hour break, but still define the dailywork with 6,4hrs. What
is the definition of the start and end for? Do i have any consequences
through this difference between the 6,4hrs defined and the 8hrs defined
through the start and endhours? (simular, when i define 6hrs a day, 5
days, but 32hrs a week? how does that work?)

thx a lot rgds, manuel

Note that regrdless of the units you choose to use for duration, internally
Project always records, calculates, and tracks in minutes. When you say a
task has a duration of "2 days" Project converts that into minutes
internally - it DOES NOT use a single day of the week, regardless of working
hours, to define a "day." If "day" is defined as 8 hours on the
Tools/Calendar/Options page, "one day" is one or more blocks of time that
add up to 480 minutes regardless of the day of the week on which work begins
and which day of the week it ends.

Since duration is, by definition, the amount of working time between when
the work starts and when it's done, you can't change the calendar while
holding BOTH sart/end dates AND duration the same. Let's say you start with
a 40 hour per week, Mon-to-Fri calendar. You have a task that starts at the
start of the workday on Monday and ends at the end of the workday on Friday.
It's duration is 40 hours. Now you change the calendar to 30 hours per
week. If the task duration remains at 40 hours, when we reach the end of the
workday on Friday there's still going to be 10 hours of work remaining to do
and so the end date when we will have completed those 40 hours has to get
later. If the task starts at the start of the day Monday and ends at the
end of the day Friday, there's only 30 working hours between those two time
and the task duration has to drop from 40 hours to 30. You can hold EITHER
duration OR start/end constant but you can't do both - take your pick.
