Adjusting the minimum distance between tab stops

The Word tab ruler seems to have an underlying 'grid' to which tab stops 'snap'. Can this grid be adjusted to allow smaller increments for more precise positioning of tabs. I need this to align merge fields to an existing form

Hi, Doug,

You can change the grid: Display the Drawing toolbar, click the Draw button
at the left end, select Grid, and set the horizontal spacing to a smaller
value.

Even without changing the grid, you can either hold the Alt key while
dragging tab stops on the ruler, or use the Format > Tabs dialog to set the
position value.
