Administrative Projects & PWA Timesheets

John M.

I have noticed that the combined actual work and remaining work on
Administrative projects are displayed in the Assignment Remaining Work field
on the PWA Timesheet view - with the Actual Work field = 0, and the % Work
Complete field = 0%.

This is obviously not how the data is stored in the work plan; so is this
done for Admin projects in PWA purely so that the tasks are not displayed as
being "Completed" and are available for team member time entry even when
filtering for incomplete tasks?

Just curious.... Thanks!

The assumption behind administrative tasks is that they are never complete.
Conceptually, they are like "empty buckets" into which people "pour" their
time for administrative work, but the buckets never fill up. Thus, the only
way to "end" an administrative task is to remove the administrative project
from the Project Server database. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale.

It just seems like MS could have accomplished the same behaviors without
displaying the total of the timephased admin actual work in the remaining
work field. If a team member is interested in the amount of time "poured"
into one of these buckets to date, then they can't look in the assignment
Actual Work field on the timesheet view -- which is not a big deal, but just
quirky.

You've just pointed out one of the many frustrations with using the default
administrative project in Project Server 2003. To get around some of these
problems, we have recommend the use of regular projects that function like
an administrative project, but without the formal administrative project
setting in Project Server. Thanks for the additional insights. :)
