after closing Outlook 2007, emails continue! Help!

After closing Outlook 2007, it is obviously still running as it continues to
download incoming emails. Can anyone tell me how to turn it off? The Windows
Task Manager does not show Outlook as running

Do you have a PDA or mobile phone connected?

No! Just an external hard drive. The Outlook icon sits in the taskbar after
closing program

Something is preventing Outlook from closing completely. Often this caused
by an addin or an external application relying on the outlook.exe process.
