after connecting to vpn exchange server not found

When I try to gather e-mail from a microsoft exchange
server, i get the message, "the name could not be
resolved. The server is no longer available." I have tried
some of the suggestions from the database to no avail.

I am running windows 98 se and outlook 2000.
