Not able to setup Outlook 2007 to Exchange Server in VPN

I frequently connect to a client system using VPN. The client uses an MS
Exchange Server (with RSA SecurID authentication). I am able to use Outlook
2003 manually configured to this Exchange server, but Outlook 2007 doesn't
work even with manual configuration. I keep getting the message "Outlook
needs to be online". The VPN doesn't use proxy servers for internet access.
It is a straightforward connection. Any suggestion that might make this work
would be most helpful. My client side OWA is running out of server space.
