After saving office documents a couple of times they become read o

Some users are working on a word or excel document and after a couple of
saves to the document it becomes read-only. They are saving the document on
the network. The only way to work around it is to do a "save as" and create
a new copy of the document or spreadsheet or save document to the C:\ Drive.
Would really appreciate any ideas.

Hi Jansael,

we are getting the same problem. Unfortunately, I have not found a
solution but I can share some of what I have been able to find out. I
had a theory that it was related to offline files but group policy
disables offline files in our network and the share does not allow
file caching anyway. It only happens on 1 share on 1 server which
happens to be the largest repository in the organisation. I can
reproduce the problem more readily with certain documents but when I
move these files to other shares on the same server even, it does not
happen.

I can login using "Safe mode with networking" and still get the
problem. Even opening Word in Safe Mode!

Like you, it also happens in Excel but it also happens for MS
Project. It happens for Office 2002 and 2003 users. We don't have
many 2007 users yet.

Our servers are attached to a SAN for most of their storage. Do you
have DAS, Jansael?

I have resolved this issue. Make sure that Symantec is properly installed
and running. Make sure that the definitions are up to date and that Symantec
is online. In my case, the file became read only when I tried to save
because Symantec was scanning it at the time. It would do this every time I
tried to save Word and Excel spreadsheets. The fix was to uninstall Symantec
and reinstall it. For some reason the un-install from Add/Remove programs
did not work so I uninstalled it manually. On another employees machine I
repaired Symantec and it worked. So if anyone runs into any problems with
files becoming read-only check your anti-virus software.

I don't use Norton Antivirus (I use McAfee) and I have this same problem with
documents become read only. This problem started for me after installing a
major update (I think a service pack) from the Office Update site.....

In my previous thread I mentioned that Symantec could be an issue. It turns
out that its not Symantec. This issue is very frustrating because no one
seems to have the solution =( I have been researching this and some people
seem to think that it could be a third party add-in. You can check your
add-ins in MS Word. And also in Internet Explorer.

Good Luck.

I think it is somehow related the Office 2007 service pack.... or perhaps the
interaction with the service pack and the Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 COM
add-in...I've tried disabling this add-in to see what happens....

LeeN,

In regards to your reply I have had this issue with Office 2002 and 2003 as
well.

Thanks.
